Germany, Austria & Hungary 29/04 to 09/05 1994
Single manned on this trip, as normal new track Diesel hauled and new engines (marked with #) being the main aims. It would be my first visit to Hungary to sample the M61's so armed with their latest known workings (thanks to Phil (Barney Rubble) Wormald) off I went. Do not expect to see any Hotel gen in this report, they only get in the way of the moves!
Friday 29/04/94
Managed to save taking a day off from work with an evening flight from Heathrow, however the trip started with a bump! Flight was shown 2 hours late / wait in Lounge (in my case Wetherspoons UK side - there wasn't one customs side then).
The next time I looked up from sipping my latest pint it said last orders for Boarding! I legged it down the corridor towards Customs unaware the carpet hid one of those nice undulations that you can't see at all so down I went, being weighed down by my bag full of clothes I did not land well. That will be me limping for the next 3 days or so then - thanks! At least I made the flight.

You could (& did) spend hours at home planning moves, with the aid of the Kursbuch (German timetable - a massive affair) & loco diagrams. Some of the trains only ran certain dates or once a week - so to cover all 4 lines diesel hauled and behind new locos was quite a result!

And now for something completely different! Apart from new track from Gemunden to Bad Kissingen I was going to spend the day in the former East Germany covering a Plandampf between Erfurt & Meiningen as I'd heard Neath's Dad was out covering this.
I would normally only go into former DR territory for 2 reasons 1) the excellent Harz mountains narrow Gauge steam & 2) following any new track class 218's started doing in the East.

This pair of Big steam locos was the highlight of the day - there was also beer on board!
I surprised Neath's Dad on this but his quote of "Have you seen my Coat?" surprised me back, he'd left it on a previous train apparently (I think he did recover it later).
I told him of having to suffer a Red Shed to get into the area and my fears that I might have to take one back out again but he informed me that the train from Meiningen to Schweinfurt we made off this special had been a DB 212 the past two days.
Not in my diagrams it wasn't but to my surprise 212 295 was sat there when we arrived. Even better it would be new track most of the way & it was a winner to boot! The front coach was empty so not even any Fresh Air police to stop me bellowing out the window all the way.
The days biggest surprise: 212 295 at Meiningen about to work the 1802 to Schweinfurt

You shall now witness something some people will not believe where I'm concerned - I travel through Bamberg TWICE without having a beer either time! The reason for this was I wanted to try a new style of beer for me in Lichtenfels I think it was "Rock" beer aged in rock caves.(My Good Beer Guide Germany by my mate Neath (Steve Thomas) is in my locker at work & I can't drive there due Covid19 so I can't verify this).

A very poor move for sleep (I normally did the 2220 from Stuttgart after beers in the "Old Ascot Inn" a rock pub that sold a cracking Schwarz beer - this lead me to wake up in DR land more than once!) and the Red Shed was a shock but needs must as I wanted to cover a new 218 diagram on the Ingolstadt to Augsburg line that had been solid DMU only for years.
That would be new track, also trying for Keufbeuren to Fussen, Neufarhn to Straubing & Passau to Muhldorf quite an ambitious day!

No point doing a new line if you can't see anything!(& a rare as rocking horse shit Muhldorf 212 took me back from Pfarrkirchen that day!)

??? ??? Hegyeshalom - Gyor 2219 Munchen - Budapest Keleti
A great overnight giving me a chance to catch up on some much needed sleep. So much so I missed my 1st engine of the trip. As Hungary was a new country for me it will ALL be new track with a myriad of new locos - the reason for coming on a Friday being the M61's worked some additional's on a Friday taking weekend trippers and holidaymakers to the shore of Lake Balaton so more locos worked today than the rest of the week.

M61 002#) Tapolca - Budapest Deli 1025 Tapolca - Budapest Deli 184km
M61 017#)(Steaming)(Both powered from Gardony)
A fantastic way to do your first run along the lake, the driver in the inside loco just snoozed until we hit the mainline proper at Gardony but from there to Deli it was full thrash from both locos.
(When back in the UK at the next Weekly Wind Up I produced the above photo of the pair and Rubble actually thumped me!)
On arrival in Budapest I was desperate to get some money changed into Forints as I hadn't eaten all day, down to the bank under the station to queue (no cash points back then) but how much to exchange to cover two days? I decided on £10 as I knew the country was notoriously cheap!!

A fantastic day, what better than to cap it all with a few locally brewed beers. That narrowed it down to the Dreher brewery but in the days before internet etc you had to go searching yourself. Budapest is renowned for it's hills but I soon came across a bar (open all night) with Dreher emblazoned outside & four of their beers on - ideal.
A fit baglet was behind the counter and my overnight didn't depart until 0025 so I had time to try several beers. They operated the "tick your beermat" policy, every time you had a pint, so giving you no idea how much you've spent. It suddenly dawned on me, after about 5 beers, I need to pay up or risk not having enough cash. I did so and even though I'd bought food a couple of times off the trolley on the trains I still had about half my cash left! When I informed the baglet I had enough money to drink all night she looked somewhat dismayed...…… so I had one more then went for my overnight. I had obviously overlooked the effects of doing 7 overnights in a row because on leaving the premises I realised I was in a right old state!! I did manage to get back to Deli somehow...
Saturday 07/05/94
Peckham (Graham Belton) had told me M61's had a working out of Szombathely (although this was not reflected in the diagrams) so that was the overnight I was on.
??? ??? Budapest Deli - Szekesfeherver * 0025 Budapest Deli - Szombathely 67km
M41 2108# Szekesfeherver - Szombathely 0025 Budapest Deli - Szombathely xxkm
(* Location of loco change assumed / too drunk to really know!)
The M61 was booked out of Szombathely at 0635 but on arrival off the overnight I was fast-on until a lady walking past the compo knocked on the window to let me know we'd arrived at journeys end. Unfortunately I found I could not stand up, let alone walk, so I put my bag on my back with my arms through the handles then crawled off the train, I couldn't face crawling to the waiting room so I went on hands & knees straight across the platform to a set of stock forming the next service out - I didn't even know where it was going just crawled on and got my head down again!

The M61's are held in high regard by the Hungarian people, they are seen as a symbol of their strength of will as a nation that they ordered locos from outside the Soviet block even though that regime had been forced upon them. Even more than that, after independence was won, one loco carried a special livery to commemorate this - M61 004!
M61 004# Alsoors - Budapest Deli 1410 Tapolca - Budapest Deli 123km
What a fantastic run! No problem bellowing out the window as the whole trains complement of passengers were doing the same, every station we passed saw everyone on the platforms waving, every car we passed had honking horns and arms flailing out the windows - & the Driver was a right merchant!!
It took quite a while at Deli to get the following photo, all the trains passengers wanted to shake the Drivers hand or have photo's taken in front of the loco.
What an introduction to the M61's! I knew at that moment I would be back - I'd even had to raid the on-board trolley as I had plenty of Forints left out of my tenner's worth, I now had a bag full of bottles of beer!

A day in what is my favourite European country over the years, Austria. Not the mainlines as much as the narrow gauge systems which I can't seem to drag myself away from, I've been back time and again.

They would often run in this formation to/from Laubenbachmule & split a set off here to form local services but I have never been able to figure if the rear loco is powering? There's never a driver in it. If anyone knows better I'd have a lot more mileage please do tell!) What's not to like about electric locos built in 1909 that have rods & clag! Not only that it's a hell of a route up into the mountains.
