Germany 08/06 to 21/06 1991 "Rods to Rodach"
A multi purpose trip, the normal new loco and new track scenario on the one hand & a more relaxed, culturally themed middle bit! I started the trip with John Sandham, spent 9 days with a non-crank friend from Immingham in the middle & finished bumping into Trog! # = New Locos.

Saturday 08/06/91
The overnight ferry as usual followed by a swift move across Belgium to Germany (also as usual).

If anyone wonders how you can have 21 218's in a row & only have a repeat loco once - it took hours of careful planning at home looking through the diagrams & Kursbuch (timetable)!
Then a LONG leap to Koln for our planned overnight. I must have visited the buffet for beer on this journey.

Time to say goodbye to Mr Sandham. My mate Jez was arriving into Germany from Immingham on a Freight ship - direct from Immingham Docks! Most have a few proper cabins for when owners or Spouses etc join crew-mates on the boats, Jez worked for ABP in Immingham Docks and had arranged passage out & back on Freighters!
The stunning lack of beer drinking on the trip so far would be remedied over the next 9 days as Jez had put a veto on overnights, wanting time to explore destinations & do B&B's. This meant I booked rooms in pubs whenever possible & as I was in charge of the itinerary I would be using the travel we did do to cover new track on routes I'd hitherto not managed to cover. Pretty good Eh!
218 428#  Hamburg Hbf - Cuxhaven        0801 Hamburg Hbf - Cuxhaven 115km
216 058#  Cuxhaven - Wremen                 0957 Cuxhaven - Braunschweig 29km
218 904    Wremen - Cuxhaven                 0747 Hannover - Cuxhaven 29km
I had travelled up to Cuxhaven (new track for diesel) on an earlier train than I needed to, giving me time to cover 2 diesel turns in Cuxhaven & meant I'd get a different 218 back to Hamburg to boot.
218 462    Cuxhaven - Hamburg Harburg 1121 Cuxhaven - H.Harburg     103km
103 109    H.Harburg - Hamburg Hbf       0650 Frankfurt - Hamburg A.   12km
218 497#  Hamburg Hbf - Lubeck            1311 Hamburg Hbf - Goteborg 63km
Then time for some more new track.
218 491#  Lubeck - Oldenburg                 0847 Koln - Puttgarten              54km
                 (Via Neustadt)
218 491 about to run round in Neustadt. Why this International service ran via Neustadt I don't know - I'm just glad that it did!
218 324    Oldenburg - Hamburg Hbf       0750 Goteborg - Hamburg Hbf 117km
103 192#  Hamburg Hbf - H.Altona         0856 Obertsdorf - Hamburg Altona 7km
218 126#) Hamburg Altona - Kiel            0818 Munchen - Kiel               104km
218 166#)
I think there was time for a meal & drinks in Kiel. Probably.
218 126)   Kiel - Hamburg Altona            2249 Kiel - Innsbruck              104km
218 193#)
Yes I know we've not done a lot of "Culture" so far - that will start tomorrow! Jez used to do Freedom of Scotland Rovers with me in the mid 80's so is well used to train travel - but NOT a Euro Crank.
Wednesday 12/06/91
110 361#   Hamburg Alt. - Nurnberg        2249 Kiel - Innsbruck           645km
141 043#   Nurnberg - Furth (Bay)           0724 Nurnberg - Bamberg    8km
141 032#   Furth (Bay) - Nurnberg           0722 Erlang - Nurnberg        8km
Breakfast could wait, there was some new track for diesel available & under the wires at that!
111 044#   Nurnberg - Roth                      0811 Nurnberg - Munchen    26km
211 044 at Roth ready for a run "under the wires" on the 0808 Hilpostein - Nuremberg. Jez is sat on the bench with our bags wondering when he'd be getting some breakfast.
211 044#   Roth - Nurnberg                      0808 Hipoltstein - Nurnberg 26km
At last some culture for Jez, about 3 hours to grab brekkie & wander around the medieval streets of Nuremberg.
111 006#   Nurnberg - Bamberg               0949 Munchen - Berlin         62km
I'd been desperate to cover the 211 turn from Coburg to Rodach (a threatened branch) for some time - now was my chance, we'd be doing more culture later.....
218 216     Bamberg - Lichtenfels            1115 Wurzburg - Hof            32km
141 218#   Lichtenfels - Coburg               1312 Lichtenfels - Neustadt 21km
What's this - the 211 was in the yard shunting a rather hefty looking log train - where's the Pilot loco for that job? Of course, it's on our train!
360 241 looks pleased as punch to be working a passenger vice shunting in its yard! Waiting to work the 1343 Coburg -  Rodach
360 241#   Coburg - Rodach                    1343 Coburg - Rodach          18km
As the destination board on the side of the Silberling coach says this is the Coburg - Rodach branch. The main question was "where's the 211 gone ?"
360 241     Rodach - Coburg                    1427 Rodach - Coburg          18km
141 029#   Coburg - Breitengussbach      1548 Coburg - Bamberg       45km
211 049     Breitengussbach - Bamberg   1618 Eburn - Bamberg          8km
Well that was different! Bamberg is a Unesco World Heritage site, the Old Town over the river is crammed with medieval buildings including a fine Cathedral on the hill. Of more interest to me were the 13 family run Breweries & various beer gardens in the town! A cultural look around the Old Town followed by a night B&B in Brauerei Fassla with most of the drinking done in Brauerei Spezial straight across the road.
Thursday 13/06/91
A leisurely breakfast in the Fassla before making our way to Buchloe
141 021#    Bamberg - Nurnberg             0942 Bamberg - Nurnberg     62km
103 129      Nurnberg - Augsburg            0620 Bremen - Munchen       137km
218 435      Augsburg - Buchloe              1313 Augsburg - Obertsdorf  40km
From here the Bavarian hills and mountains roll by - it's a fantastic route down to Lindau especially south of Kempten.
218 474      Buchloe - Lindau                  1255 Munchen - Lindau         131km
Another top route following the Bodensee lake for part of the journey, also giving Jez chance to say he'd been to another country - Switzerland.
218 301#    Lindau - Singen                    1537 Lindau - Basel                93km
215 140#    Singen - Schaffhausen          1756 Singen - Schaffhausen   19km
11127#       Schaffhausen - Singen          1157 Geneva - Stuttgart          19km
Finally a run into the Black Forest, a journey we would complete tomorrow.
110 234      Singen - Tuttlingen               1157 Geneva - Stuttgart          34km
I didn't know where to stop tonight (no Camra Good Beer Guide Germany for info in those days) I plumped for Tuttlingen which fitted in with the move but turned out not great on the beer front. We'd booked a room above a Chinese restaurant - the ceilings were so low we both had to stoop to get around the room! I don't know what we ended up drinking but I do remember being drunk & needing Jez's help to get back to the room (so it was probably wine)!
Friday 14/06/91
We started by continuing our trip up through the Black Forest.
110 354#    Tuttlingen - Stuttgart            0713 Zurich - Stuttgart            138km
103 245      Stuttgart - Plochingen          0606 Karlsruhe - Salzburg       22km
A short branch but difficult to do as the train service was mainly based around the students attending Kirkheim Tech!
212 348      Plochingen - Oberlenningen 1142 Plochingen - Oberlenningen 24km
212 348      Oberlenningen - Plochingen 1238 Oberlenningen - Plochingen 24km
110 408#    Plochingen - Stuttgart           0840 Landeck - Saarbrucken         22km
110 179#    Stuttgart - Heilbronn             1348 Stuttgart - Heilbronn             53km
140 679#    Heilbronn - Bad Friedrichshall Jagstfeld 1440 Heilbronn - Osterburken 11km
A major signalling farce here led to us cutting our loses & getting a bus from outside the station to our ultimate destination Heidelberg. This turned out to be a good move, its a University city with a large Student population & is very nice. Even better we found a very recently opened brewpub to spend the evening drinking in.
Saturday 15/06/91
141 347#    Heidelberg - Neustadt           1001 Heidelberg - Kaiserslauten  45km
120 148#    Neustadt - Homburg             0600 Feldkirch - Saarbrucken       69km
141 120#    Homburg - Neunkirchen       1211 Homburg - Neunkirchen      14km
141 003#    Neunkirchen - Wemmetsweiler 1251 Neunkirchen - Saarbrucken 8km
Now for my only piece of new track today:
212 342      Wemmetsweiler - Lebach     1311 Wemmetsweiler - Lebach     18km
212 342      Lebach - Saarbrucken           1338 Lebach - Saarbrucken          36km
We checked into our B&B before continuing the bash
110 145#    Saarbrucken - Trier               1512 Saarbrucken - Koblenz        88km
181 224#    Trier - Luxemburg                1643 Trier - Luxemburg               40km
Another new country for Jez
181 224      Luxemburg - Trier                1826 Luxemburg - Trier               40km
110 145      Trier - Saarbrucken               1819 Koblenz - Saarbrucken        88km
Another nice place, here we managed to do a couple of brewpubs - one was right opposite our digs!
Sunday 16/06/91
No better way to start than a 218 all the way to Frankfurt, (including new track as far as Turkismuhle)
this was a lovely scenic route for 218's.
218 378#   Saarbrucken - Frankfurt         0912  Saarbrucken - Gottingen    212km
103 148#   Frankfurt - Aschaffenburg      0538 Hamburg Altona - Wien     46km
218 425     Aschaffenburg - Lauda           1256 Aschaffenburg - Ulm          100km
That was 100 kliks of new track for Diesel!
110 179     Lauda - Wurzburg                  1427 Stuttgart - Wurzburg            43km
141 014#   Wurzburg - Bamberg             1656 Wurzburg - Hof                    100km
We were meant to check in at the Fassla once again - but a winner prototype backed onto the train so Jez took the bags to check-in & I scratched the loco in.
218 006#   Bamberg - Lichtenfels           1656 Wurzburg - Hof                    32km
111 033#   Lichtenfels - Bamberg           1820 Coburg - Lauda                     32km
Another session in the Spezial (why not) but also a couple in the Fassla Brauerei where we were staying.
"New Boys" the Fassla only started brewing in 1649! What a place Bamberg is.
Monday 17/06/91
141 037#   Bamberg - Nurnberg           0723 Lichtenfels - Nurnberg          62km
103 164     Nurnberg - Munchen Hbf   0712 Fulda - Munchen                   199km
218 320#   Munchen Hbf - Holzkirchen 1148 Munchen - Schliersee         37km
This was new track for Diesel but a bit pointless - I would have to do it again when I eventually went to Schliersee!
111 211#   Holzkirchen - Rosenheim   1223 Holzkirchen - Kufstein          37km
111 006     Rosenheim - Salzburg        1250 Munchen - Salzburg               88km
Lunch and some sightseeing in another new country for Jez - Austria.
111 006     Salzburg - Traunstein         1618 Salzburg - Karlsruhe              35km
My cunning plan was to do winner track Traunstein to Garching with a 218, however we were well & truly BOWLED!
798 621)   Traunstein - Garching         1715 Traunstein - Garching            34km
798 649)
218 343#  Garching - Muhldorf           1718 Salzburg - Muhldorf              16km
We were staying in Muhldorf, not a place really geared up for the tourist trade (I had struggled to find somewhere to book a room) at the time, although these days I believe the area is very popular with Tourists.
After checking in we looked for somewhere to eat. The German traditional menu consists of about 95% meat, while stood outside a Restaurant perusing the menu to make sure we didn't order Horse, we noticed a Vegetarian section. The example shown in the photo being a Ham salad, liberally covered with chunks of ham. Well it is a salad! I don't think they'd quite got the hang of this vegetarian lark.
After dining (no Horse / no Salad) we made our way to the newly opened Muhldorf brewpub, just a few doors from the railway station.
Tuesday 18/06/91
218 392    Muhldorf - Landshut           0725 Freilassing - Landshut           55km
111 218    Landshut - Regensburg        0837 Munchen - Berlin                  62km
218 010#  Regensburg - Weiden           0837 Munchen - Berlin                  86km
My main aim today was the new track from Weiden to Bayreuth
211 059#  Weiden - Bayreuth                1225 Weiden - Bayreuth                59km
This became of my favourite trains, the 1225 Weiden to Bayreuth always seemed very sociable - followed by Beers in a few of Bayreuth's fine pubs.
218 423#  Bayreuth - Nurnberg             1525 Bayreuth - Nurnberg             94km
120 157    Nurnberg - Fulda                   1521 Munchen  - Bremen              215km
B&B in Fulda, this was the night I first found the pub where your stein of Kulmbacher beer was delivered to your table by model train - Hellfire!
Wednesday 19/06/91
A simple plan to do the diesel route to Giessen then forward along the Ems valley on the diesel route to Koblenz.
216 198#  Fulda - Giessen                      0845 Fulda - Giessen                     106km
Not so simple after all - bowled by a 628 unit!
Shires       Giessen - Koblenz                  1115 Geissen - Koblenz
A classic run up the Rhine for Jez, unfortunately not with a classic class 103
110 256#  Koblenz - Solingen Ohligs     1321 Koblenz - Wuppertal Oberbarmen 121km
212 270    Solingen Ohligs - Wuppertal Elberfeld 1506 Solingen Ohligs - W.Elberfeld 42km
The old order on DB with hordes of 212's scuttling about on local suburban services. Those were the days!
111 127    W.Elberfled - W.Vohwinkle    1249 Kassel W - Aachen              6km

A varied and interesting trip, I managed to mop up many bits of hard to get required track during my time with Jez. I always thought I could have done a lot more on these days but on reflection we still did quite a bit of travelling! I did 5 trips to Germany in 1991 so doing something a bit different like this was no bad thing.
